Product Manufacturer: Algoma Central Railway
Product Name: Agawa Canyon Tour Train
Product Review: The Algoma Central Railway operates the Agawa Canyon Tour Train, departing out of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. The tour train heads north, through beautiful mixed maple, conifer forests to the Agawa Canyon, 114 miles north of Sault Ste. Marie. Along the way passengers are treated to view of prestine wilderness, remote camps, beautiful northern lakes and rivers. These are the scenes that inspired Canada's Group of Seven artists to paint their northern landscapes.
I've taken the special fall leaves tour on the Agawa Canyon Tour Train twice, in the fall of 2002 and 2003.
The train itself has a series of passenger cars, each equipped with huge windows so you don't miss any of the view. The seats are arranged as two to a side, however at the front and end of each car, the second row of seats are turned so you can sit as a group of 4, facing each other. Be aware though that if you choose to face each other, you will have to share your leg room!
The train has audio speakers so you can hear the tour staff point out scenes of interest. The train also has a souvenir car, and meal car, and a snack booth.
When you arrive at the Agawa Canyon, you are able to depart the train, and spend the next two hours as you wish, either having the lunch you bring with you at one of the many picnic tables, or go on a hike around the canyon floor, or both!. Be sure to bring warm clothes because the temperature at the Agawa Canyon is much cooler than you will expect!
Box lunches are available before you board the train in the morning, or you can bring your own, or take your turn visiting the dining car.
The train also has a premium dome car available for a greater fare. The dome car has a second level with dome windows to allow passengers to view the treetops. Seats on the dome car must be reserved in advance, with 20 passengers allowed to sit in the top level in the morning while the other 20 sit on the main level, each group switching for the afternoon tour back to Sault Ste. Marie.
The Agawa Canyon Tour Train is a full day, 8-5 o'clock tour. I thoroughly enjoyed both of my trips, although the day does become very long, and neither time was I able to keep my eyes open for the last couple of hours back to town.
The Algoma Central Railway also operates a Snow Train tour in the winter.
