How to Shit in the Woods: An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost Art
Our once-pristine wildlands are threatened by ever increasing problems of pollution. Since its first publication in 1989, How to Shit in the Woods has been adopted by outdoor enthusiasts everywhere as part of the solution. In this updated edition, outdoorswoman Kathleen Meyer reviews the newly available portable potties, with special attention to individual trekkers in an all-new chapter, "Plight of the Solo Poop Packer." Other topics include: the growing array of travelers' field water-disinfecting systems, Giardia contamination and the now infamous critter Cryptosporidium, crotch-accessible clothing for women, and a fresh batch of "worst experience" stories, all peppered with irreverent musings. For the purist, there are more wise t.p.-less techniques from the Old World. Written with an effervescent sense of humor, this is a book for anyone who wants to enjoy the outdoors responsibly.
The Best of Outdoor Life
The Best of Outdoor Life is the third, updated edition to the acclaimed Treasury of Outdoor Life. It includes the most distinguished stories and articles that appeared from 1898 through 1981 in Outdoor Life - one of the most respected outdoors magazines in the United States. It also includes a generous selection of old covers and advertisements of the time - making it, in all, one of the most exciting anthologies about outdoor sport ever assembled.
The seventy-six stories and articles, selected by William E. Rae, former editor in chief of Outdoor Life, cover a wide range of subjects. There are great hunting and fishing stories, gripping survival tales, and humorous anecdotes by outdoorsmen who saw the comical aspects of their sport. There are also articles illuminating interesting corners of outdoor lore: the mythical expertise of Wild West gunmen, the fascinating history of the Kentucky Rifle, the intriguing hallucination known as "early blur." Brief introductions to the stories, written by Rae, provide the background and, if possible, biographical sketches of the authors.
The Best of Field & Stream : 100 Years of Great Writing
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Field & Stream with this full and totally entertaining treasury of more than 50 great articles from a century of classic outdoor writing. The subjects included in The Best of Field & Stream are as diverse as the great outdoors itself: fishing - from the pursuit of big game in the seas to fly fishing for trout in mountain brooks; hunting - from waterfowl and upland birds to the dangerous game of Africa; dogs and camping, and much more. The selections include most of the famous sporting writers of the century - such great older writers as Zane Grey, Robert Ruark, Burton Spiller, A. J. McClane, Corey Ford, Ted Trueblood, Roderick Haig-Brown, H. G. Tapply, Nash Buckingham, Ed Zern, and such superb contemporary writers as Keith McCafferty, Datus Proper, George Reiger, Russell Chatham, Tom Kelly, Gene Hill, Bill Tarrant, John Barsness, and many others. These are the best of the mainstream writers in the American sporting tradition, and together with a color insert of the best Field & Stream covers, this absorbing treasury will be a great treat for all lovers of the great outdoors.
The Best of Outside : The First 20 Years
For two decades Outside magazine has remained committed to good writing, publishing feature articles from well-known authors on a variety of topics connected (in sometimes obscure yet fascinating ways) to the outdoors, adventure, travel, and just about anything else that happens beyond the confines of the mall. The most memorableof these pieces are collected in a single anthology, The Best of Outside: Tom McGuane offers compelling reasons to hunt; Jonathan Raban discusses life on the open ocean; Barry Lopez considers the graceful and beleaguered flocks of snow geese that once filled the skies. Also included are the original articles from Jon Krakauer and Sebastian Junger that would expand into their bestselling books Into Thin Air and The Perfect Storm, respectively.
