Parks Canada, who operates Canada's National Parks, is worried that geocaching is harmful to the environment.
Parks Canada believes that off-trail travel could disturb bird nesting and breeding, impact wildlife, trample vegetation, cause soil erosion, disturb cultural artifacts and landscapes. They feel that the idea of leaving a physical cache goes against their "pack-in, pack-out" and the "leave no trace" ethic. Now they have an Interim Policy in place ( http://www.pc.gc.ca/docs/pc/poli/interim/geocaching_e.asp ) It says "Physical geocaching is now posted as a prohibited activity in all Parks Canada-administered protected heritage areas, in order to provide a regulatory and compliance mechanism for managing the activity."
